The Trellis Center strives to create individualized experiences that combine personal choice and community integration with professional oversight, family involvement and stability. We partner with the individual, their family and other members of their support team to get to know them and design services around activities and goals that are important to them.

At the Trellis Center, we believe that everyone is capable of reaching new heights and thriving in the community. Our services for adults with developmental disabilities focus on personal choice while recognizing the specialized, and often complex, needs of the individuals we serve.

The Micro-Enterprise Model of Employment

The Trellis Center’s unique micro-enterprise model allows adults with developmental disabilities to experience the ultimate rewards and responsibilities of operating a business. A micro-enterprise is a small business, typically having fewer than five employees and requiring less in startup capital.

Micro-enterprises for individuals with disabilities represent a customized employment option that involves matching a person’s dreams and talents to economic activity and designing support strategies that promote a successful tenure. That is, a small business owned by a person with a disability is typically formed around the person’s interests and developed based on the cultivation of a market. The existence of a market does not in itself drive the process. Rather, the person’s career aspirations and talents take precedence in designing an enterprise. This employment option seeks a fit between the individual and the marketplace.

Owners play an active role in their business from decision making, to marketing, networking, and daily operations. The Trellis Center provides assistance with vocational skill building, positive behavioral support, communication and social skills training, time management, marketing, networking, administrative tasks and transportation. The Trellis Center emphasizes leadership development when helping business owners, in addition to helping get their products to market.
