May Newsletter

May was the first month of the year that we have really been able to get outside every day. We love living in such a beautiful part of the world, and enjoy taking advantage of what Washington State has to offer. This month, during our recreational program, the Trellis Center was able to go on quite a few hikes to enjoy nature. One great hike we went on was to Lake Easton State Park where we enjoyed the weather by taking a hike around Lake Easton. This hike lead us through wooded areas as well us up to a bridge over the water. We were also given the great opportunity to visit the Central Washington University greenhouses. While we are used to our own greenhouses full of herbs and vegetables, the CWU greenhouses were a fun adventure through tropical plants and cacti. We also got to meet some of CWU’s exotic animals such as Snorkel the tortoise and many different kinds of snakes, including a rattle snake. We all enjoyed our trip to the CWU greenhouses and meeting such unique animals. A special thank you to Dr. Mary Paulson and the staff of the Department of Biological Sciences for such a fun visit.

The Iron Horse Brewery hosted a pint night fund raiser for the Trellis Center at the end of May. The pint night was a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for the Trellis Center. We would like to thank everyone who came out and participated in the pint night and raffle that evening. It was a great success. We also want to thank the Iron Horse Brewery for donating a free growler and growler fill for that raffle. As well as a big thank you to Muff and Dan Heffernan for donating an Xbox One and Kinect for the raffle.

The beginning of May also brought the beginning of the farmer’s market season. This meant we were able to get out into our garden beds and transplant our vegetable starts from our greenhouses which we seeded in April. We are excited to see our plants already beginning to produce our first harvest. We have been and will continue to sell vegetables, herbs, and plant starts at the Kittitas County Farmer’s Market. If you were not able to visit us at the market in May we will be attending the Farmer’s Market on June 13th and 27th.

As always, thank you to all who support the Trellis Center. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer with us, please contact us by email at contact@thetrelliscenter.com or by phone at (509)-968-4040.
